<div style="text-align: left;">
We had a great meeting the other day with lots of chat and laughter going on, as well as lots of sewing. At lunch time we had our traditional show and tell session, and here is the slideshow, which, for some reason, blogger will not let me put in the centre of the column. Grr.</div>

<u><br /></u>
<br />
We haven't had any Show and Tell photos for a bit and I thought we needed some to keep the blog lively. I took some photos on April 18th and hoped to perform digital miracles by getting them on the blog<br />
Sue Abrey has been trying to instruct me in the finer points of doing this ,but I am a very slow learner , digitally inept ,and no use to man nor beast. Subsequently if you would connect manually to the link below you <u>may</u> behold the pictures . (there again you might not ).<br />
Sorry the pictures are nameless but they were all smashing.<br />
Thanks to Liz for the pencil roll tutorial.<br />

I will try and do better from here on.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now, to the question. <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;">This is something that has been exercising my brain a lot lately. What exactly IS a "modern quilt"? I have seen various suggestions as to what constitutes a modern quilt, ranging from quilts not having borders, quilts with a lot of white in them, quilts that only use plain fabrics and various other suggestions. I have already posed the same question on my own blog, here and received some interesting answers, so I thought I'd throw this one out to you lot. Who can define modern quilting for me?</span></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I'll see some of you tomorrow at our meeting.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Oh yes, and don't forget our challenge. To make a fabric postcard on the theme of Spring. The entries are due at our March meeting.</span></div>
QuiltSuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18121195815836334067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1324166120759180555.post-64864328083837753232014-12-14T15:13:00.000+00:002014-12-14T15:13:20.731+00:00It's Christmas ...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
... well it nearly is, and yesterday we had our Christmas party.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o8nuUFvXN0s/VI2f4JBaPWI/AAAAAAAAHTU/FGEK4qclh88/s1600/20141213_17.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o8nuUFvXN0s/VI2f4JBaPWI/AAAAAAAAHTU/FGEK4qclh88/s1600/20141213_17.JPG" height="200" width="131" /></a></div>
There were about 20 of us, and Liz decided we needed a Christmas tree, so she brought her own, which she decorated with very appropriate baubles. If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you'll see what I mean.<br />
<br />
In order to have room for everyone, this meeting was declared a sewing-machine-free zone and Hazel provided a super handsewing project for us all. We all made little key-fobs, and here you can see some of the finished ones.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dBpyrGveGOU/VI2f3468UdI/AAAAAAAAHTQ/3Zq3_w1rGrs/s1600/20141213_15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dBpyrGveGOU/VI2f3468UdI/AAAAAAAAHTQ/3Zq3_w1rGrs/s1600/20141213_15.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k4blwQE4I8g/VI2f24b8ovI/AAAAAAAAHS8/7eF4R2ZuNVM/s1600/20141213_14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k4blwQE4I8g/VI2f24b8ovI/AAAAAAAAHS8/7eF4R2ZuNVM/s1600/20141213_14.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was a great project, which also allowed plenty of time for chat - always good at a party. They are very addictive, and I can see more of these in my future for sure. Thanks Hazel for doing this for us.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, a party wouldn't be a party without food, and boy was there food. There was mock-mulled wine too, which Sue provided (and I have to say, in all modesty that it was lovely) with not a drop of alcohol in it, so all drivers were able to enjoy it too. I was going to show a photo of some of the food, but it seems I was too busy eating to remember to take any photos of it, sorry. Take my word for it though, it was all yummy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After lunch we had our show and tell.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anne had made a lovely cushion cover. I loved the back just as much as the front, and a great pair of flanelette Christmas lounging trousers. She also made a great table runner, but I'm not showing that cos my photo did not show her best side, and trust me, she would not be happy with me if she saw it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sdN4Ef-hDZI/VI2f8d4x7AI/AAAAAAAAHUI/HV3hnTKdppU/s1600/20141213_4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sdN4Ef-hDZI/VI2f8d4x7AI/AAAAAAAAHUI/HV3hnTKdppU/s1600/20141213_4.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTeRJKe-g5o/VI2f8go5cLI/AAAAAAAAHUQ/JoaYfVA7OO8/s1600/20141213_5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTeRJKe-g5o/VI2f8go5cLI/AAAAAAAAHUQ/JoaYfVA7OO8/s1600/20141213_5.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Muriel showed us her hexagon quilt and, as always with Muriel, the back was as wonderful as the front, and she also brought along her finished Christmas stocking which she started at the last meeting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TtrWLmiSaeY/VI2f-2oFFMI/AAAAAAAAHUo/AlujZpw2RbM/s1600/20141213_8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TtrWLmiSaeY/VI2f-2oFFMI/AAAAAAAAHUo/AlujZpw2RbM/s1600/20141213_8.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PUhfltpGWPU/VI2f-5TfPRI/AAAAAAAAHUs/pysFO_P117c/s1600/20141213_9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PUhfltpGWPU/VI2f-5TfPRI/AAAAAAAAHUs/pysFO_P117c/s1600/20141213_9.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1JJfsNT14Jw/VI2f9-ZtlxI/AAAAAAAAHUg/TL4MtF5tGSM/s1600/20141213_7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1JJfsNT14Jw/VI2f9-ZtlxI/AAAAAAAAHUg/TL4MtF5tGSM/s1600/20141213_7.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Drew brought along his quilt, and told us that he made all the bias bindings himself, and hand appliqued the whole thing. He has marked it for quilting and plans to hand quilt a one inch diamond grid on it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g-dLxaGXcMg/VI2f25b5seI/AAAAAAAAHTE/hCfJO0l0oAg/s1600/20141213_10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g-dLxaGXcMg/VI2f25b5seI/AAAAAAAAHTE/hCfJO0l0oAg/s1600/20141213_10.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He also brought along a stunning quilt with something over 100 blocks in it, but I seem to have lost the photo of that one, sorry Drew. Anyway, the photo below shows what he is doing with the left over bits from that quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tOhAXkYMHP4/VI2f2sOoJmI/AAAAAAAAHS4/DfoxdxOBjQE/s1600/20141213_13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tOhAXkYMHP4/VI2f2sOoJmI/AAAAAAAAHS4/DfoxdxOBjQE/s1600/20141213_13.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also had a quilt to show, but, since I was showing and telling, I didn't take a photo of it! So, moving swiftly on, a<span style="text-align: center;"> couple of months ago Helen suggested we did a name badge Secret Santa swap, which she organised for us and here are some of the badges. I love how different they all are. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vjBwDx6QRyI/VI2f4glsnrI/AAAAAAAAHTc/aAJRD0c9N74/s1600/20141213_18.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vjBwDx6QRyI/VI2f4glsnrI/AAAAAAAAHTc/aAJRD0c9N74/s1600/20141213_18.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had a little party game too. I scrambled up the names of 20 quilt blocks, and people tried to unscramble them. Some were easy, some were not! The winning team was Lis, Pauline and Drew.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Secret Santa swap was so popular that it was suggested we had another group activity. Someone who shall remain nameless (ie, me) suggested we made quilted postcards on the theme of Spring, so come on YMQG members, get your thinking caps on and start sewing. The plan is to display them all anonymously in March, and I think we may even vote (also anonymously) for our favourites, and who knows, there might be a prize involved too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, as we were clearing up, Hazel announced that she had bags of scraps that she did not want to take home. I couldn't resist this photo - they're going to kill me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Now here is a brief summary of both our October and November meetings.<br />
<br />
During the October meeting Anne showed us all how to make Christmas stockings with a Seminole border at the top, like this one<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JBkRdHQequU/VID-THxSruI/AAAAAAAAHSQ/4VX83uhfUAQ/s1600/photo%2BL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JBkRdHQequU/VID-THxSruI/AAAAAAAAHSQ/4VX83uhfUAQ/s1600/photo%2BL.jpg" height="200" width="155" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and afterwards many members had a go at doing their own version. Thanks Anne, I think everyone enjoyed making them, and found the technique was fun. We also had our usual show and tell session at lunch time and here is the slide show of everything members have been up to.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

During our November meeting Janet showed us a great way to make a journal cover <span style="background-color: transparent;">and I think I know what many people will now be finding in their Christmas stocking this </span><span style="background-color: transparent;">year. <span style="font-family: inherit;">Oh hang on, just let me explain first how I chose the winner of this e-book. The<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;"> review was posted on this blog, and also on my blog <a href="http://quilttimes.blogspot.co.uk/">here</a></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">. All the comments on my own blog are numbered, but those here are not (yes, I know I said I would get that sorted, but I forgot!). So all I did was allocate numbers to the comments here running straight on from those over there. That gave a total of 64 for Mr Random.org to chose from, and the number he chose was comment number 53</span></span><br />

Janet was the co-founder of our group along with Hazel, who was in the spotlight last month. <b><i>Who/what inspired you to start quilting? </i></b> </div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I saw some fabric scraps in The Skep in
Farsley in 2000 and thought to myself ‘I think I’ll make a quilt – how hard can
it be?’</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What do you love most about quilting? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;">Piecing without a
doubt. I love to get lost in the process and forget about everything else
except sewing. I love to experiment with improvised piecing and scrap piecing
and I love to use up the scraps from a finished quilt in another improvised
piece.</span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What is your least favourite part? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
Layering and tacking my
quilts together. I like the result when quilts are tacked rather than pinned or
spray basted but find the process cumbersome.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What is your favourite technique, ie hand or machine sewing,
appliqué, quilting, etc? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
At the moment it is quilting using the walking foot.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What new techniques do you hope to conquer in the future?</i></b> </div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I
would like to develop my skills in the area of quilt design.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Do you use patterns or make it up as you go along? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;">I often
start with a pattern or a photo of a quilt I admire, but never usually end up
with a quilt that looks like the original.</span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>When you’re starting a new project, do you have the design
all worked out (on computer/paper/in your mind) before you start? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
No – this is
not always a good strategy and has led to a few headaches!</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;"><b><i>Do you buy/gather all the fabrics for a project before you
start? </i></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;">Not usually – I try to use fabrics from my stash!</span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Do you like using pre-cuts such as FQ bundles, jelly rolls,
layer cakes or charm packs? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I don’t buy a lot of these but Moda scrap bags are
my downfall!</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">

quilting adventure? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;">Just go for it – don’t worry about making mistakes, don’t
worry if your points don’t match, enjoy the process.</span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">

Thanks to Margaret for sending them to me.</span><br />
<br />
Sorry I'm late with this post - I can't believe how quiet having a bad foot made me.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I, along with a lot of other people, went off to the Great Northern Quilt Show a couple of weeks ago. I was pleased to see how busy it was, as that must help to ensure its future.<br />
<br />
Our group was quite well represented as the following photos show.<br />
<br />
Liz's Wheels quilt won two awards, which is absolutely fantastic, but probably didn't surprise any of us who have seen the quilt before. Since Liz also won the book giveaway from my last post, it was obviously her lucky week, and I hope she bought some tickets for the lottery that week too.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here are the other quilts that our members submitted. I think I (with a little help from Hazel) found them all, but if I missed anyone, I apologise and blame it on my bad foot. (Wonder how long I can keep blaming that foot for things?)<br />

Well, before I tell you the name of the lucky person who will receive a copy of this e-book, I want to explain how I chose someone. This review was posted on this blog, and also on my blog, <a href="http://quilttimes.blogspot.co.uk/">here</a>. All the comments on my own blog are numbered, but those on this one are not - hmm, must get that sorted out before the next review. So all I did was allocate numbers to the comments on here running straight on from those on QuiltTimes. That gave a total of 49 for Mr Random.org to chose from, and the number he chose was</div>

and no.45 is Harrysmum, who said<br />

I will send Harrysmum an email, but congratulations to her and thank you everyone who took the time to enter. I will have another book review and giveaway in a couple of weeks, so do keep coming back and checking to see what you could win next time.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
As its title suggests, this book contains quilts designed by
well known bloggers from around the world.
There are 19 stunning quilts included, all with very clear instructions,
plenty of diagrams and templates where necessary.</div>

The book starts off by stating the main rule about modern
quilting, which is that “there are no rules”.
So, anything goes really in terms of shapes, colours, designs and
quilting, and this is certainly borne out by the quilts which vary from
minimalist, such as Petal Pod to quite the opposite, like Scattered and from a
modern take on a traditional quilt such as Rainbow Stashbuster
to improv piecing seen in Improv Color Blocks.<br />
<br />
When I read the book, I loved the tips that are often
included such as how to sew a smooth curve.
I also like the fact that many of the quilts also show suggestions for
optional, pieced backings. This is not
something I’ve ever done before, but I can definitely see myself trying them in
the future.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You will also learn something about each of the contributors,
as they have all written a little about themselves and you can visit their blogs to see
more of their work.<br />

Which are my favourite quilts? That’s not easy to answer as I really love
Trees, which I could see in all sorts of Christmas prints and Starflower, which
I think would look great in plain colours.
Then there’s Petal Pods which I’d love to make in shades of orange and
raspberry, and Knots, which is calling (actually it’s shouting) out to me to
make it in aquas and blues.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Now all I need is a magic wand to make my days longer so I
can make them all.<br />

Oh yes, there was some sewing going on too.<br />
<br />
Sheila did a superb demonstration on reverse applique, and afterwards quite a few members had a go at it. I am ashamed to admit that I did not get any photos of Sheila's examples (I specially loved her book covers) and nor did I take photos of some great work done afterwards by some of the group. I am sorry about that, and if anyone has any photos and would like to share them, please just leave a comment below this post, and I'll get back to you.<br />
<br />
We also had our usual show and tell session, so grab yourself a coffee/tea/wine/whatever and sit back and enjoy the show.

In The Spotlight today is Hazel, one of the founders of our group. Hazel is an inspirational teacher and also runs regular pop-up shops offering us all the chance to feed our quilty habit. If you visit her website, <a href="http://cottoncocktails.co.uk/">Cotton Cocktails</a>, you can find out about the courses and workshops Hazel is holding, and you can also find the date of the next shop day, and even download price lists. I hope you enjoy reading Hazel's answers to my questions and maybe learning something new about her.<br />
<br />
<b style="line-height: 150%;"><i>Who/what inspired you to start quilting? </i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I’d done lots of sewing, knitting, crochet, cross stitch etc
and I bought a few quilting magazines but never had a go until I saw a beginner
class advertised at Samuel Taylors which used to be on Meanwood Road. I made my
first quilt and was hooked!</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What do you love most about quilting?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I like everything about it! I love playing with colour and
shapes and the actual process of sewing a quilt and seeing it develop. It’s
brilliant because there is always something new to try.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Of the quilts you have made, which is your favourite, and why?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
My favourite is a very classic looking blue and white 2 block
quilt with Ohio stars and a chain block. It’s special because I made it for my dear
departed brother who loved it.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What is your favourite technique, ie hand or machine sewing, appliqué,
quilting, etc?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
It’s hard to choose! I like easy piecing because it grows
quickly, machine appliqué with blanket stitch edges but my favourite is
probably free motion quilting because it can transform a quilt. </div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>What new techniques do you hope to conquer in the future?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I haven’t anything in particular in mind at the moment but
there’s always something new around the corner. That’s the brilliant thing
about quilting. </div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Do you use patterns or make it up as you go along?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I sometimes start with a pattern but often change it in some
way. I use Electric Quilt to plan most of my quilts and can’t imagine how I’d
manage without it.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Would you describe your quilting style as scrappy or controlled?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I like to be in control! Scrappy quilts don’t really appeal
to me as much as ones with a definite colour scheme. I like bright clear
colours with lots of contrast to show up the designs.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>When you’re starting a new project, do you have the design all worked
out (on computer/paper/in your mind) before you start?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I do pretty much have the design worked out but will often
leave decisions about the fabrics for the sashing, borders, and binding until I
get to that stage. I can then try out what looks good before I cut and sew them
in place.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Do you like using pre-cuts such as FQ bundles, jelly rolls, layer cakes
or charm packs?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I do like pre-cuts as they’re a quick way to get started on a
project and a good way to buy lots of coordinating fabrics in one go. I do
think it’s a good idea to buy one or two of the fabrics in a larger amount at
the same time to put aside for borders etc
as they often aren’t easy to find at a later date.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Do you have any advice for someone just starting out on their quilting
adventure?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
Join a class so you can learn the basics from someone who has
previously made all the mistakes for you! Quilters love to share their hints
and tips so quilting in a group is the best way to go.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
<b><i>Do you have a favourite quilt book?
If so, why is it your favourite?<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 0cm; mso-add-space: auto;">
I have a very large collection of quilting books which I add
to all the time and I don’t really have one particular favourite.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br />

The other day I was talking to Hazel and she was saying that she is very busy, andstruggling to find time to keep our bog up to date. Well, before I knew what was happening, the words just popped out of my mouth and I offered to take over writing the blog for a while. I hope you're all OK with this, but if not, or if you would like to share the writing, do let me know.<br />
<br />
I have one or two ideas in mind for regular posts, but if there's anything else you think could be included, just shout. You'll need to shout quite loudly though, cos I've got a problem with one ear at the moment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jTByHXVj398/U-okxgXBvYI/AAAAAAAAG-g/Br22-G5WPLA/s1600/Stage_vector3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jTByHXVj398/U-okxgXBvYI/AAAAAAAAG-g/Br22-G5WPLA/s1600/Stage_vector3.jpg" height="200" width="180" /></a></div>
One of my bright ideas, which I am starting straight away is a regular "In the Spotlight" feature,where I will ask a willing volunteer to answer some questions for me, and I'll then write a blog post with their replies. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Bvn4ddKUS0/U-om4BRhoDI/AAAAAAAAG-s/TvlikzWwzvk/s1600/Rfc_Book_On_Monitor_clip_art_medium.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Bvn4ddKUS0/U-om4BRhoDI/AAAAAAAAG-s/TvlikzWwzvk/s1600/Rfc_Book_On_Monitor_clip_art_medium.png" height="199" width="200" /></a></div>
Another thing I'm going to be doing regularly is a book review. I have persuaded several publishers (Martingale, CT Publications and American Quilters' Society so far) to send me e-books which I will then review here. Some of these reviews will also include a giveaway of an e-copy of the book. I have a great list of books so far, some brand new out, some slightly older, but all with a modern theme (obviously) so I hope you enjoy this.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jJ3Xfo5KCxA/U-onzUnSiAI/AAAAAAAAG-4/8oqEK3VPSfs/s1600/For%2Bsale.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jJ3Xfo5KCxA/U-onzUnSiAI/AAAAAAAAG-4/8oqEK3VPSfs/s1600/For%2Bsale.png" height="200" width="173" /></a><br />
I also wondered if there is any interest in a Buy/Sell/Swap article from time to time? This could be fabric, books, tools, finished quilts, UFOs, anything really with a quilt-related theme. What is the general feeling about that?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
One last thing (for now), if you write a blog and would like to be listed on the sidebar, please let me know the blog address and I'll add it straight away.<br />
<br />
OK, well that's enough of my witterings for now, come back in a couple of days to see who is "In the Spotlight" this month.QuiltSuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18121195815836334067noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1324166120759180555.post-53076459634443859682014-03-24T12:03:00.001+00:002014-03-24T12:03:16.899+00:00A New Challenge<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<br />
On Saturday we had another enjoyable Sit and Sew Day with many people making Sewing Caddy bags, an inspirational Show and Tell and we set our first challenge! I'll start with the challenge then share photos of the bags and quilts.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Wheels Challenge</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As I'm sure you know, the Tour de France will be starting in Yorkshire this year! To celebrate 'Le Grand Depart' a friend of mine is organising a quilt show in Harrogate and is on the lookout for quilts to display. I thought it would be great to promote Modern Quilts by encouraging you to provide some for the show and also to enter for the Great Northern Quilt Show in Harrogate at the end of August. There are four rules for our challenge:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. The theme is 'Wheels' - this can be interpreted in any way you choose and can be made using any technique.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. The colour scheme is bright colours with a white or other light neutral background.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. The item should be of a size to be eligible for one of the categories for the <a href="http://www.grosvenorshows.co.uk/Harrogate_2014_Entry_Form.pdf" target="_blank">Great Northern Quilt Show</a> and have a hanging sleeve, if appropriate.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. The deadline is June 21st which is the date of our June meeting.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That's it! You don't have to make a large item as anything from a cushion size upwards is eligible and it doesn't have to be your own design provided you acknowledge any pattern you use. Follow this link for the <a href="http://www.grosvenorshows.co.uk/Harrogate_2014_Entry_Form.pdf" target="_blank">entry form for the Great Northern Quilt Show</a> to read the rules for the show which we will encourage you to submit your quilt for. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Coincidently on Saturday Helen had a quilt for show and tell which was perfect for the challenge!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JcnZHLyWol4/UzAHz-T16gI/AAAAAAAAC3I/8Z4Y1eZEglg/s1600/Helen+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JcnZHLyWol4/UzAHz-T16gI/AAAAAAAAC3I/8Z4Y1eZEglg/s1600/Helen+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Helen used a pattern from <a href="http://cluckclucksew.bigcartel.com/product/spin-cycle-quilt-pattern-129-pdf-version" target="_blank">Cluck Cluck Sew called Spin Cycle</a>. She was worried that the free motion quilting wouldn't be good enough for the shows but your entries do not have to be perfect. In fact we want to encourage visitors to have a go at quilting and not make them think it is too hard. We will allow the quilt police to deter our enthusiasm! This quilt also proves you don't have to sew curved seams to interpret our theme. The bag front design at the top of our post would also make a lovely Wheels entry. For more inspiration visit our '<a href="http://gb.pinterest.com/yorksmodquilt/wheels/" target="_blank">Wheels' collection of photos on Pinterest</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We plan to collect the quilts from you at the June meeting for display at the Tour de Yorkshire exhibition and then take them to the Harrogate Quilt Show if you are willing to enter them for that too. Of course your quilts will be returned to you. If you have any questions or suggestions about the challenge please leave a comment below.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now on to the bags and quilts from Saturday. We were using a free pattern for the sewing caddy from <a href="http://ginabeanquilts.com/2009/11/sewing-caddy-tutorial-take-two.html" target="_blank">Gina Bean Quilts</a>. Linda and Sandra have been making these for a while and provided invaluable help and advice to everyone working on these - thank you both for that. Here are a few photos of the caddies, some finished, some work in progress!<br />

<br />
Aren't they lovely? Well done to everyone who had a go at this project!<br />
<br />
Now on to show and tell. Again we had a huge variety of quilts, some in a modern style, some not so much but we love seeing everything our members make!<br />

<br />
This coming Saturday is our next Sit and Sew Day and it's time to book your place! You <u>must</u> <a href="http://www.contactify.com/92dd0" target="_blank">email me</a> if you want to join us as we have been getting very busy lately and places are limited. Please don't just turn up on the day as you may be disappointed. Here are the important details:<br />
<br />
Date: Saturday 22 March<br />
Time: 10am to 4 pm (arrive from 9.40 onwards)<br />
Place: Deepdale Community Centre, Boston Spa, LS23 6EH<br />
Cost: Around £3 depending on number of people attending<br />
Tea and coffee provided<br />
<br />
<br />
This time our project is a lovely Sewing Caddy (as in the photo) which Sandra and Linda introduced to us a couple of months ago. <a href="http://ginabeanquilts.com/2009/11/sewing-caddy-tutorial-take-two.html" target="_blank">Click on this link for the free pattern by Gina Bean Quilts</a>. You will need to click on the link in the post to open the instructions and then click on 'File' then 'Print PDF' or 'Download' to save it to your computer first before printing it. You must print your own copy to bring to the SASD as it is lots of pages so we will not be printing these for you! You may want to cut out the pieces before the day so you can get on quickly with the sewing.<br />
<br />
I'll bring some fabulous stiffening 'Decovil Light' (£8 per m) and thin Fusible Fleece (£6 per m) in case you want to use them to make your bag nice and firm, plus the usual fabrics, threads and notions for those who want to browse the portable shop with absolutely no pressure to buy.<br />
<br />
Of course you don't have to make the caddy, you could work on any project of your choice. Don't forget to bring your lunch and something for show and tell as well as all your sewing stuff!<br />
<br />
To get you in the mood here are some photos from last month's Show-n-Tell:<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Hello Everybody.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">At the last meeting I was the idiot who suggested it might be fun
to have a series of posts here introducing ourselves, so here I am writing the
first one.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SnByd26XBxI/UvepyzpwoLI/AAAAAAAAGjQ/wcirWgZBrys/s1600/Author+photo+of+Me..jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SnByd26XBxI/UvepyzpwoLI/AAAAAAAAGjQ/wcirWgZBrys/s1600/Author+photo+of+Me..jpg" height="200" width="141" /></a></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My name is Sue and I am a quiltaholic. That covers it
really, but just in case you’re interested, I think a little more information
might be in order.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I certainly did not grow up surrounded by craft, and my first
project was an apron, started during needlework lessons at school, which I
never even managed to finish. I have dabbled in knitting from time to
time, and used to enjoy doing crochet, but I don’t do either of them nowadays.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I used to like traditional styles of quilts and fabrics, such as
this one, which is my first ever quilt <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div align="center" class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">but over the past year or so I have changed and now I love the
same type of designs but made in modern colours.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I’m very lucky because I don’t work so I can play with my sewing
machine(s) almost every day. I have three machines, Baby Brother who
comes to meetings, workshops, etc with me; Big Brother who is a straight stitch
semi-industrial machine with a larger throat and Big Bertha, my longarm
machine.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I was once asked what my most invaluable quilting tool was and
why. I think they expected me to say it was my sewing machine or my
rotary cutter, but actually I think it’s probably my computer. I use the
computer to design quilts, write patterns and also to drive my robotic longarm machine. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am lucky to have my robot by the way,
since I am totally unable to do freemotion quilting. There are not many
of these systems in the UK, so here is a picture of Big Bertha,<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">and have also had a book called <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pick-Four-Fabric-Choices-Quilts/dp/1604680202/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391709326&sr=8-1&keywords=pick+four+abrey">Pick Four</a><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>published.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I had no background in writing or
publishing, (other than writing my blog,) when I got this crazy idea
that I could write a book, but luckily for me the publishers Martingale &
Co seemed to think I could do it.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I have also been asked where I get my inspiration. That’s an
interesting question, and I wish I had an interesting answer, but the truth is
that I don’t know, ideas just seem to pop into my head from nowhere.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I blog at <a href="http://quilttimes.blogspot.co.uk/">Quilt Times</a>, and I would love for you to come and visit me over there. I try to have some fun there, and for a few years I ran a Christmas Quiltalong </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NERW2LZbCss/Uveze3-E3rI/AAAAAAAAGkQ/fgLTWCDzOFY/s1600/Christmas+QAL+button+2013+v2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NERW2LZbCss/Uveze3-E3rI/AAAAAAAAGkQ/fgLTWCDzOFY/s1600/Christmas+QAL+button+2013+v2.jpg" height="200" width="132" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">with virtual friends (and some real ones too) all sitting down and sewing on Christmas projects. One year I also ran a mystery quilt, and another year I issued a Christmas challenge to every one. I also ran a year long quiltalong where participants were all making Lone Star quilts (a sneaky way of getting myself to start and actually finish one).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><img height="150" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Ms5ONrg34yQ/ULpnJu34LsI/AAAAAAAAEWM/0dUbPGHobP4/s200/20121201_1.JPG" width="200" /> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I really must get that quilted now.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My perfect day would be to quilt all day, with someone in the
background doing all the housework, cooking etc for me. It’d be good if
they could also bring me coffee and chocolate at regular intervals.
Well, I can dream, can’t I?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Thanks for reading this. I'll see you next Saturday at our Sew-In.</span></div>

<br />
Our January sit and sew day was an inspiring start to the New Year! We spent most of the day just sewing and chatting and having a nosey at what everyone else was sewing - perfect! At lunchtime we had our usual show and tell with some fabulous quilts. Helen's quilt above is based on the <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/2011/08/giant-vintage-star-quilt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Giant Vintage Star tutorial by Jeni Baker</a> and makes great use of fat quarters in a quick to make quilt.<br />
<br />
Here's another of Helen's<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ne4JTnXjuKA/Ut6kkmkzgvI/AAAAAAAACwE/ca7fT3W7Wm8/s1600/2014-01-18+14.27.01+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ne4JTnXjuKA/Ut6kkmkzgvI/AAAAAAAACwE/ca7fT3W7Wm8/s1600/2014-01-18+14.27.01+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Beautiful hexagons from a layer cake and the free '<a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/02/hexagon-park.html" target="_blank">Hexagon Park</a>' pattern on Moda Bake Shop -just stunning!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OFi7NWoJtPw/Ut6mROj5LGI/AAAAAAAACwQ/Qcm-P8Xas9U/s1600/2014-01-18+14.28.34+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OFi7NWoJtPw/Ut6mROj5LGI/AAAAAAAACwQ/Qcm-P8Xas9U/s1600/2014-01-18+14.28.34+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
Jane's quilt top uses simple blocks - squares with a triangle pieced to two corners, in a lovely gentle colour palette.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HZ6-DT5u-1M/Ut6mVYWUmuI/AAAAAAAACwg/Ua0J0eVdWRE/s1600/2014-01-18+14.23.13+%2528Medium%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HZ6-DT5u-1M/Ut6mVYWUmuI/AAAAAAAACwg/Ua0J0eVdWRE/s1600/2014-01-18+14.23.13+%2528Medium%2529.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sue brought along a great scrappy colour block quilt above and her take on the 'Low Volume' quilt many of us made last year, shown below</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-taVcGtLmMpk/Ut6mVTuowhI/AAAAAAAACwk/zFpm3BlE96c/s1600/2014-01-18+14.22.31+%2528Medium%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-taVcGtLmMpk/Ut6mVTuowhI/AAAAAAAACwk/zFpm3BlE96c/s1600/2014-01-18+14.22.31+%2528Medium%2529.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Liz had also finished her Low Volume quilt and the off centre spiral quilting looked great!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xBxMXNzZ5K0/Ut6n0AD4PbI/AAAAAAAACws/cjTJzOhkbiA/s1600/2014-01-18+14.29.48+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xBxMXNzZ5K0/Ut6n0AD4PbI/AAAAAAAACws/cjTJzOhkbiA/s1600/2014-01-18+14.29.48+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="253" /></a></div>
<br />
She was working on this stunning star quilt and trying to decide how to quilt the stars. We all liked the backing fabric and will be visiting the store where she bought it soon!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fLdWkXoatlA/Ut6oOF67ZQI/AAAAAAAACw0/NqQu4gO3pBM/s1600/2014-01-18+14.30.47+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fLdWkXoatlA/Ut6oOF67ZQI/AAAAAAAACw0/NqQu4gO3pBM/s1600/2014-01-18+14.30.47+(Medium).jpg" height="260" width="320" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved this applique design made by Sheila but she said she wasn't keen on the technique used - raw edge applique!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mNGIBvM56pg/Ut6pH4ahvHI/AAAAAAAACxI/F834UIZuAtc/s1600/2014-01-18+14.40.41+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mNGIBvM56pg/Ut6pH4ahvHI/AAAAAAAACxI/F834UIZuAtc/s1600/2014-01-18+14.40.41+(Medium).jpg" height="231" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Quiltsue of 'Pick Four' fame brought this stunner from a Kim Bracket design. I think I spot more that 4 fabrics in this one Sue!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
June is one of our newer members and sews quilts for Project Linus. Here's a fun idea for children made from scraps of novelty prints: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aWUgmtk-DAA/Ut6re8JjweI/AAAAAAAACxc/2dx-BD2NQtQ/s1600/2014-01-18+14.46.58+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aWUgmtk-DAA/Ut6re8JjweI/AAAAAAAACxc/2dx-BD2NQtQ/s1600/2014-01-18+14.46.58+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="251" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And a brilliant frog quilt:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KSLC_DeHJJQ/Ut6sid21PoI/AAAAAAAACxk/Xk8KyFmRYvU/s1600/2014-01-18+14.47.29+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KSLC_DeHJJQ/Ut6sid21PoI/AAAAAAAACxk/Xk8KyFmRYvU/s1600/2014-01-18+14.47.29+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="292" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Margaret who also joined us recently had pieced this scrappy quilt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x63reds2TNY/Ut6suFTc1cI/AAAAAAAACxs/FSUs-4MG0v4/s1600/2014-01-18+14.51.37+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x63reds2TNY/Ut6suFTc1cI/AAAAAAAACxs/FSUs-4MG0v4/s1600/2014-01-18+14.51.37+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="242" /></a></div>
<br />
And although not a modern quilt we all admired the embellishments on this crazy patchwork:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XZKXZxus8Kg/Ut6teNnUIEI/AAAAAAAACx0/-iOol8Qr-Wc/s1600/2014-01-18+14.52.47+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XZKXZxus8Kg/Ut6teNnUIEI/AAAAAAAACx0/-iOol8Qr-Wc/s1600/2014-01-18+14.52.47+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Last but not least another beautiful scrap quilt but I can't remember whose it is - sorry! If it's yours please add a comment below!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5ce0efrp5cI/Ut6uG8SSV8I/AAAAAAAACx8/6HnXEbOpClE/s1600/2014-01-18+14.34.29+(Medium).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5ce0efrp5cI/Ut6uG8SSV8I/AAAAAAAACx8/6HnXEbOpClE/s1600/2014-01-18+14.34.29+(Medium).jpg" height="320" width="272" /></a></div>

Earlier this month we had another lovely sit and sew day with 16 of us spending the day sewing and chatting, sharing projects and enjoying a delicious 'Fuddle'! Our show and tell was as spectacular as ever with stunning quilts and works in progress. Janet and Jackie treated us to an explanation and demo of crumb quilting with lots of examples to admire. The photo above is of Janet's finished Trip Around the World started on a previous SASD and made entirely of 2" squares of red, white and blue fabrics.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the crumb and scrappy blocks on display:<br />

I'm afraid I didn't get photos of all the quilts so apologies to everyone I missed. You can see more on our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/YorkshireModernQuilters?ref=profile" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> where Liz is keeping us updated with news, photos and events. If you have photos to share you could add them to our <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/1979828@N23/" target="_blank">Flickr page</a>.<br />
<br />
Our next SASD will be on January 18th, 2014 at Deepdale Community Centre Bosoton Spa. I'll be posting more details in the New Year. So until then<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas!<br />

Hello! Hazel here. Sorry for the long silence but I've been busy enjoying the summer and I'm afraid I've been neglecting my blogging duties! The Harrogate Quilt Show starts tomorrow and that signals the start of the Autumn term is imminent!<br />
<br />
We'll be meeting more frequently from now on - about once a month. The first will be on Saturday 21st September at Deepdale Community Centre, Boston Spa just south of Wetherby and a stone's throw from the A1. We'll meet from 10am to 4pm and you can either work on your own project or have a go at making a quilt similar to Andrea's quilt pictured above.<br />
<br />
For those of you planning to stock up on fabrics at the show the requirements for Andrea's quilt are:<br />
For a small version (30" square approx) you'll need 11 pieces of fabric 13" square in neutral prints or solids and one 13" square in a bright colour. Andrea added sashing and a border to hers so I guess a metre for the sashing and half for the borders should just about do.<br />
<br />
For a larger version (60" square) you'll need 33 neutral 13" squares and three in the bright fabric. You would easily get three 13" squares from a half metre of fabric.<br />
<br />
Please let me know if you are planning to come to the SASD as space is limited at Deepdale and we don't want to run out of tables!<br />
<br />
Enjoy the show if you're going. Hopefully I'll post lots of photos in a few days time.<br />
<br />

<br />
Yesterday was our third Sit and Sew Day and a very productive day it turned out to be! We started out with strips:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xg6Aim0zmzo/Ub9IB3DWXKI/AAAAAAAAClM/EGLhGyxo10o/s1600/P1070095+(Medium).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xg6Aim0zmzo/Ub9IB3DWXKI/AAAAAAAAClM/EGLhGyxo10o/s320/P1070095+(Medium).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TNFr3yjzTZE/Ub9IB4mRKjI/AAAAAAAAClI/V1bB3Aw2Guk/s1600/P1070096+(Medium).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TNFr3yjzTZE/Ub9IB4mRKjI/AAAAAAAAClI/V1bB3Aw2Guk/s320/P1070096+(Medium).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The sewing machine's whirred as the strips were sewn together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1vfaUOJ-d1c/Ub9IRWf0AjI/AAAAAAAAClY/TJHr3dX3YSk/s1600/P1070098+(Medium).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1vfaUOJ-d1c/Ub9IRWf0AjI/AAAAAAAAClY/TJHr3dX3YSk/s320/P1070098+(Medium).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then we cut the strip sets up into sections and wielded our seam rippers to create our Trip around Yorkshire blocks - to everyone outside God's own county they might be known as Trip Around the World!<br />

If you'd like to make your own Trip Around Yorkshire then follow <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.co.uk/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html" target="_blank">this link to Bonnie Hunter's tutorial.</a> If you really can't face making something quite so scrappy then<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.co.uk/2005/06/trip-around-world.html" target="_blank"> this one</a> might suit you better!<br />
<br />
A couple of people were working on their own projects:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dbr9QKS7Hkc/Ub9LBkz-eiI/AAAAAAAACoM/LOaeAS87xr0/s1600/P1070097+(Medium).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dbr9QKS7Hkc/Ub9LBkz-eiI/AAAAAAAACoM/LOaeAS87xr0/s320/P1070097+(Medium).JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Of course there was lots of chatter and laughter along the way with plentiful supplies of tea and biscuits. At lunchtime we had a show-n-tell of lovely quilts:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Time flew by so fast we really could have stayed much longer!<br />
<br />
We're looking forward to our next get-together when Andrea is going to show us how to make her quilt which we all loved:<br />

There'll be more details soon of what you need to bring if you want to have a go. Our next SASD will be on September 21st at Boston Spa so put the date in your diary!<br />
<br />
In the meantime if you have blogged about any of our SASDs or have blogged about making a Scrappy Trip Around the World please leave a comment below with a link to your post. We would also welcome some guest posts on this blog so let me know if you'd like to contribute!<br />
<br />
Happy Stitching!<br />

At last I have dates for your diary! Our next Sit and Sew Day will be on Sunday June 16th at Clifford Village Hall, Albion Street, Clifford (view maps here: <a href="http://www.clifford-pc.org.uk/google-map12">http://www.clifford-pc.org.uk/google-map12</a>) from 10am to 4pm. As usual we'll have a show and tell and lots of lovely chat interspersed with a cuppa and plan to do lots of sewing!<br />
<br />
Last time we met we decided to have a go at the 'Trip Around the World' which Liz had brought to show us. She promised us it is very quick and easy! The instructions are from Bonnie Hunter and you can read more on <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.co.uk/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html" target="_blank">Quiltville's Quips and Snips</a>. If you want to join in the project bring along strips 2.5" by at least 16" in light or dark fabrics and we can swap fabrics to have more variety.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 17.600000381469727px;">There will have to be a limit on the number of quilters attending so it is essential that you book in advance. To do so please send an email with your name and contact details by</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #7f7f7f; line-height: 17.600000381469727px;"> </span><a href="http://www.contactify.com/56f53" style="background-color: white; color: #a34c9b; line-height: 17.600000381469727px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">clicking here</a></span>. We will charge approximately £7 on the day to cover the room hire costs and refreshments and a couple of draw prizes.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
From the Autumn we plan to start meeting more frequently. Here are the dates for future reference: September 21st, October 19th and December 7th. These are all booked at Deepdale Community Centre in Boston Spa.</div>
